This week on the 27th, Nicholas and I will be celebrating 11 years of love and happiness! In the decade that we've been a couple we have shared some pretty AWESOME adventures, memories, and laughs together. I legit cannot get enough of this beautiful soul-man that God has blessed me with! Some of my favorite adventures with Nick have been the ones where we're in close quarters and confined spaces... for hours. And there isn't a circumstance that better puts your relationship/tolerance for your partner to the test than a road trip! lol
When we first started dating, Nicholas and I would talk about travel and planing fun things that we'd like to do together. About two years into our relationship Nick jokingly started to share that we'd never actually be able to do a road trip because I would always fall asleep in the car while we were driving anywhere... like literally everywhere (even 30 minute drives). haha I told him that this was a great indication of how much I trusted him with my life, and that he should consider it a sign of how comfortable and safe I felt with him behind the wheel. In response, he told me: it was a sign that we'd never be able to take a road trip anywhere past Maryland. lol
Fast forward 5 years. In 2013 Nick bet me that if I could stay awake during a drive up to Rhode Island, then he would consider a full-length, long distance road trip. Well, I won the bet and managed to stay awake for the entire trip (both ways)! A year later (2014) we planned our first official road trip down to Atlanta, Georgia! As we worked our way back up to Jersey, we stopped in South Carolina where we celebrated Thanksgiving with friends. I happened to be vlogging my #90DaysOfMomentum journey at the time and actually managed to capture that trip, check it out here!
We enjoyed the experience of our Atlanta road trip so much that we decided to take another road trip the following year (2015). This time, our destination was Miramar Beach, Florida, to visit Nick's uncle. But as we planned the trip we figured we'd take the time to visit other family and friends as we traveled down the coast. This led us to:
- Baltimore (to visit my family)
- South Carolina (to visit the family we'd spent Thanksgiving with the year before)
- Alabama (just to say we did)
- Georgia (to visit my bestie, Sheryl who happened to be on the East Coast shooting a BET show at the time)
- North Carolina (to visit Nick's college buddy, Justin).
About a week or two before this particular road trip we'd discovered that I was almost 3 months pregnant (with Arria). So there was plenty to talk about as we shared our thoughts on the future, our lives, and what parenthood may be like (among other things). Other major trip highlights included:
Surprising my parents with the news that I was pregnant
Taking the scenic route down the coast
Only paying $1 for toll each way (a solid win!)
Stopping in Montgomery, Alabama 50 years after Selma's bloody Sunday (apparently there had been a KKK march where we were standing exactly a week before we came through-- glad we missed that...)
Eating deer for the first time (that officially ended our 2 year stint of being vegetarians lol)
...and plenty of others, that I'm sure I can't think of at the moment
All together we traveled 8 days, drove over 37 hours and 2,533 miles, through 10 states, and had a BLAST! Immediately after our Florida road trip Nick managed to put together a highlight video of the trip (you can watch it here). Just last week I happened to come across my lost media files from the trip and decided to put together a little vlog as a Throwback post. Check it out, and if you like the video please subscribe to my channel so you don't miss out on any of our other #LiveRichAdventures (past, or present!)
By the way, I'd love to know, where was your first long distance road trip destination? Who did you go with, and what was the experience like? Was it a good one? Leave a comment below!
