Hey there Richsters!
As a stay at home #LiveRichMommy I'm always open to getting out and having a good time (especially if the kids can come along). Since moving, I've tried to keep my fun to the Jersey since it's easier to commute with the kiddies by car. But that said, there are some events that make commuting into the City worth the trip-- this weekends Mermaid Parade in Coney Island was definitely one of those times.
I love a good parade-- the creativity, the costumes, and spirit of festivity are all things I'm always here for. But for some reason this was my first time attending the Mermaid Parade. There have been many years when I was in the City on the day of the Mermaid Parade; amongst the subway platforms packed with people shimmering in glitter, bedazzled in teal ornaments, shells, and wearing full-blown fins-- but I never thought to see what all the fuss was about. Turns out that in the 13+ years I've been living here in the Tri-State region, I've been missing out on a seriously good time. Leave it to my homie, Sunnie, to put me on to the goodness. lol
After 40 minutes of fighting our way through the sweat gleaned bodies of beach goers and parade attendees, we were finally able to park ourselves and take in the fun of the parade. There were tons of creative costumes ; some paying homage to childhood icons (like the Little Mermaid), some touting political messages, and even some history lessons (there was a group of sea-witches who did a whole dance about the Salem witch trials). It was all very interesting and entertaining.
Once were were able to link up with Sunnie and Olaniyi, we made our way to explore Coney Island and the other activities that it had to offer.
BK Beach Life
Of course, it would be dripping in swag. We'd expect nothing less from this New York borough.
Prior to attending the Mermaid Parade, I'd never been to Coney Island, but I've always heard about it and its iconic history. I remember even seeing a documentary on about how major it was back in the day. Yet for some reason or another, I always associated Coney Island with being some distant place in a far-off land, not just an hour drive into Brooklyn (which is exactly how long it took). Ha! Go figure.
Turns out Coney Island is closer than any of the other beaches that we go to here in Jersey, and there's the added element of fun with there being a built in amusement park. I've been missing out-- but hey, now that I know, better late than never! :)
There was a lot to see and do: a walk about street-art gallery, food, rides, and even a day party. Whoever the DJ was, was mixing straight fire! We ended up staying at the party wayyyy longer than expected because we were having such a great time-- the babies even got in on the action (ya'll know Arria is a little dancing queen).
The day concluded with more BK fun as we left Coney Island to head over to meet my spirit twin (and "sister-friend" in my head) Freddie Harrel. Check back in a couple weeks, because there needs to be a WHOLE other post dedicated to loving up on this woman and how much she inspires me. But in the meantime, I'll leave you with this moment...
Big Hair and No Cares... unless you count the shop being over run by our kids. lol
I can't swim (yet-- I'm determined to turn that around this summer), and yes this was my first time "Mermaiding" in the big City, but it definitely won't be my last! I can try to explain how great the day was, but words wouldn't do it justice. So in true #LiveRichMommy form, I made sure to take tons of pictures (and video!) to capture all of the fun. Check out the video below, and if you like, subscribe to my channel (QuÉricaTV) so you don't miss out on this, or any other Live Rich Mommy Moments!
Until the next time #LiveRi¢h, and Happy Dream Chasing!
