Layers of Color: 1 Outfit, 3 Ways

Hey there Ri¢hster Fam!

It has been a minute since I've done a fashion post, but recently the weather has me feeling cute! Now that the cold is starting to break and a little warmth is peaking through, I'm getting the feeling that it's time to shrug off those heavy winter coats in favor of some colorful layers.

Anyone who knows me personally, knows I love my español! I purchased this amazing poncho in 2003 when I did a missions trip to build an orphanage in Chihuahua, Mexico. It was such a life changing experience for me... not only in the way I saw the world but how I interacted with it. The trip also centered me in gratitude for the things, people, and opportunities I've been afforded in my life; and the bonus was that it was the first immersive experience I'd ever had in utilizing my Spanish studies. At that point I'd been studying Spanish for 6 years and I was essentially the group translator (only 2 other people in our group of 30 or so spoke conversational Spanish).

LOOK 1: Color Me Rich

Aside from helping the local Tarahumara Indians, the next best part of the trip was the shopping! There were so many great artisan pieces to buy. I remember walking through the market places and around the native communities wanting to purchase EVERYTHING! Everything I encountered was a treat for my eyes-- it was delightfully colorful, unique, (and with the conversion rate being 10 pesos to 1 dollar) it was also amazingly inexpensive!

If I'm being completely honest, I don't remember exactly how much the poncho was-- but it couldn't have been more than $10 American. It was my first trip outside of the country and being that it was a missions trip, I didn't plan on going on any huge spending binges. There are a couple of really great purchases I made during that trip that are in mint condition and that I still use (16 years later)! This poncho, along with a couple of scarves, is one of them-- and I still get compliments all the time. :)

So now that I've highlighted all the reasons I'm obsessed with this piece, let's peel back the layers and get into the other parts of this outfit, shall we?

LOOK 2: Leather-fied

If you take the time to peel back the poncho, you can easily replace it with a classic cropped leather jacket to produce a chic casual look. This leather jacket is such an oldie but goodie! I got it almost 9 years ago when I was working at this amazing boutique in SoHo (New York) called Callalilai. If you all have been following my Thrifty Thursday fashion posts then you're aware of just how many of my favorite closet pieces (even to this day) are a result of that wonderful period of employment. lol The best part is that I never actually purchased any of the clothing; there was a commission-based sales program where we earned free clothes. I loved sales, talking with people, fashion ...and most importantly, the word "free"-- so talk about a win-win! As a 23 year-old new to the New York fashion scene it didn't get any better. lol

Working there really helped me develop my sense of style and all of these years later, the pieces are still timeless. That's why it's important to avoid buying into trends when you're shopping and looking to really build your closet. This just goes to show that you can still be stylish and reflect your personality, without breaking the bank and looking boring. There are even ways to be on trend, without buying into trends... but that's a topic for another day. Comment below if that's something you'd like me to cover in a future video! :)

LOOK 3: Basic Chic

Every great look starts with the basics. And for these looks it was a solid top, and some comfy distressed jeans.

For the past two years I've avoided shopping for clothes, since I'm still in the process of trying to loose all of my baby weight from my 2nd pregnancy. There is so much of my wardrobe that I can't wait to get back to wearing comfortably and my boyfriend jeans are one of them. I've kept my 2 favorite pairs, but since it's taking me forever to (healthily) get back to my pre-pregnancy size 4-6 jeans, I picked these up in the meantime. They were on sale for $10 at H&M so I figured, "why not?"

Since joining Weight Watchers a little over a month ago, these pants are now swimming on me. So I belted them high on the waist, so they look a little more fitted but still fit extremely comfortably!
